Open Question: Whats is life like in your east coast city?

I'm thinking of moving to the east coast. I hear living expenses are outrageous there. I have kids. Please name your city and give me an idea of average housing costs, job markets, schools, crime, etc. I am also considering the philadelphia and boston areas. I'm a city girl coming from Detroit, MI. Any info will be helpful. Manhattan is out of the question. Whats rent average in Brooklyn? I heard about the crime in Philly. What are some good areas near there? More cities please...
